Parochial Aesthetics |
"Your parochial aesthetics are a thing to be hidden, not flaunted" |
When you find yourself doing something insanely complicated, just say #gloves and start again.
We complicators and maximalists are usually blind to the idea that more is less. We forget that if a thing is complete today then there’s no room for it to grow tomorrow. That’s why you should strive for minimalism in all things. That’s why your work should leave gaps.
If you suspect that your work isn’t minimalist (as in it feels like you don’t have enough things in it) then you’ve already crossed the line into maximalist behaviour but you haven’t realised it.
Minimalism should feel as if there’s just one thing missing for the work to be perfect. Maximalism feels like everything you need is already in the work. That’s when you should cut at least two things.
The first deletion should feel awkward but the second must feel violent and painful. Like vandalism. If it doesn’t, then you should cut another two things. Repeat until you feel like you’ve gone too far and must rebuild. That’s when you should stop. So, stop.
